Data insight
Robotaxi metros over time
As of October 22, 2026, robotaxis anyone can book, with no safety driver, operate in 18 metros across 3 countries, up from 11 a year earlier.
Doubling time is 261–776 days.
Method: from the live-metro series, the shortest and longest gaps between the first date the count reached k and the first later date it reached at least 2k.
Data cutoff: October 22, 2026. That date is the latest retrieved_date in the milestone log.

Definitions
- Live
- Anyone in the metro can book a ride in the operator's own app or a partner app such as Uber. No waitlist, invite, or NDA. No safety driver in the driver's seat. A service the Availability tab marks limited is operating, but it is not in this live count.
- Driverless
- Live, and no employee aboard at all.
- Metro once
- A metro counts once on a day, however many operators serve it. The headline uses this count. The toggle switches the chart, the table, and the CSV to operator × metro.
- How the lines move
- Both lines are step series. A count holds flat, then steps on the next plotted date. paused and ended step it down. resumed restarts the live line only when that operator × metro already had first_live_public and deployment_level_after is L3 or L4. It restarts the driverless line only when that is true and the level is L4. Unknown, L2, and any other level do not restart either line. level_change sets driverless only when deployment_level_after is driverless or live (live means no longer driverless) while the service is operating. If the latest last_confirmed_operating is more than 12 months before the data cutoff and that service has no later event, both lines step down on that date.
- Dates
- Day precision is plotted on that day. Month precision is plotted on the last day of the month, so the step does not start before the month that contains the event. Quarter and year precision are left off the lines and listed in the footnote. not_yet, unknown, and n/a are not plotted. A plotted row needs source_url, retrieved_date, and confidence.
- What this log is
- Counts come from the Milestones tab of the Clanker Cab Availability workbook, committed as data/milestones.csv. The CSV download is the derived series drawn on the chart. Airport-scoped rows are not counted as metros. This page does not split metros into the US, China, and the rest of the world.
Left off the lines because the date is known only to the quarter or year: AutoX — Shenzhen (CN), ended, unknown (year).
3 services with no confirmed operation in the last 12 months: Baidu Apollo Go — Chongqing (CN); Baidu Apollo Go — Shanghai (CN); IM Motors — Shanghai (CN).
